At 2305 Gt Yarmouth Coastguard paged the South Broads lifeboat for immediate launch based on reports from a member of the public hearing a loud splash and someone calling for help in the vicinity of the Wherry Hotel.

Broads ILB1 launched from the boathouse at 2310 and at the same time the Broads 4x4 proceeded direct to the Hotel by road and launched ILB2.

Once on scene a thorough search of the area around the Wherry Hotel was carried out by both boats and shore teams consisting of lifeboat crew members, Lowestoft Coastguard, and Suffolk Police. As no one was found the search was extended to cover the whole of Oulton Broad both by boats and the shore crews for 2hrs. During the search a number of white parachute flares were used to better illuminate the area.

At approximately 1am it was decided to call off the search as nothing had been found. It was suspected the first informant had heard someone messing about and rightly called the Coastguard.

Gorleston ILB & XP
Gorleston Coastguard mobile

Yarmouth Coastguard requested that the Broads truck proceed to an incident on Breydon Water where a cruiser had run aground. Due to the tide and weather conditions neither the Gorleston Atlantic or Broads Authority could get to the boat and the South Broads XP class lifeboat, with its shallow draft, would be ideal for that situation.

The Broads Truck arrived at Goodchild Marine and launched XP-42 and was quickly on scene to join Gorleston ILB and the XP class off the ALB. It was established that the cruisers owner was happy to remain aground until high tide when a tug from Bure Marine in Gt Yarmouth was to pull them off.

As the Gorleston ILBs and Broads ILB were being recovered a report came in that the cruiser was now possibly on fire. Both boats immediately commenced re-launching however it was quickly established that the cruiser was not on fire but had turned on the heating which was causing a lot of smoke.

Once again the Broads and Gorleston ILBs were recovered and stood down.

Yarmouth Coastguard paged the South Broads lifeboat for immediate launch to reports of a boat adrift in Lake Lothing near to Brooke Business Park. As it was unknown if the boat had any occupants a thorough search of the river was required.

The South Broads 4x4 proceeded by road and launched the lifeboat at Shell Base in Commercial Road and quickly established the boat was empty. Once this was done the boat was beached and a through search of the area was conducted by both the lifeboat and shore teams consisting of spare lifeboat crew members and the Lowestoft Coastguard team.

After approximately 1 hour is was established there was no one in the river and the search stood down. The lifeboat returned to its base in Oulton Broad via the Mutford Lock where it was refueled and ready for service by 1445.

It was suspected that the boat had been set adrift or had broken its moorings.
